Pre-eclampsia & Eclampsia (HMS-PE&E) Field Validation

In April 2016, the Jhpiego-Uganda office and Helping Mothers Survive (HMS) team launched field testing of the newest module in the HMS suite: Pre-eclampsia & Eclampsia (HMS-PE&E). Five Jhpiego Master Trainers delivered the content to 80 active clinicians (midwives, nurses, and physicians) from facilities in Kampala and Mbale, Uganda.

Due to increasing interest and demand by global stakeholders, Jhpiego expanded the HMS suite to address the second leading cause of maternal mortality globally: pre-clampsia/eclampsia. The same consortium providing feedback during the design of the first HMS module, Bleeding After Birth (BAB), agreed that a targeted, facility-based, team-oriented, and highly practical training in HMS-PE&E identification and management could effectively combat treatment barriers and accelerate progress in reducing both maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality.

The HMS-PE&E module is divided into two sections, delivered over two days. Day 1 is for all providers who may interact with pregnant, laboring, or postpartum women—from the outpatient department, antenatal clinic, and labour ward. It targets rapid assessment, diagnosis, and immediate initiation of treatment with anticonvulsant and antihypertensive therapies with referral to appropriate care within a facility or to a referral hospital for ongoing management. Day 2 is designed to train skilled birth attendants who work in facilities with the capacity to provide ongoing management of women with severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.

Results from learner assessments and focus group discussions with trainers and participants have been integrated into the revision of the HMS-PE&E module and the material is being circulated for global stakeholder endorsement this summer. The finalized HMS-PE&E module will be available for download at no cost on the Helping Mothers Survive website.
